CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians' newest acquisition has power to all fields.
The club installed an innovative wind turbine on Wednesday, affixing the corkscrew-shaped structure to the top of Progressive Field. The revolutionary turbine, which amplifies airflow around a central cylinder to power four small fans, was designed at Cleveland State by Dr. Majid Rashidi, a professor of mechanical engineering.
Rashidi's design is more conducive for urban areas and confined spaces than a traditional long-blade wind turbine.
"Dr. Rashidi's new technology is playing a significant role in the advancement of wind energy," said Cleveland State president Ronald Berkman. "We are proud to showcase this exciting new design in our hometown along with the Cleveland Indians, and use this venue to move the technology closer to commercialization."
The 3,000-pound turbine will be operating by opening day on April 5, when the Indians host the Toronto Blue Jays. Development of the turbine was funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Energy and state of Ohio.
The Indians are the first major league team to install a wind turbine, which isn't the team's first environmental projects. The club installed solar panels to its downtown ballpark in 2007, the first AL team to do so.
The Indians hope the turbine will cut costs, increase its use of renewable energy and potentially create new jobs in the region with the development of new technology.
"With this project we hope to not only benefit the environment by increasing our use of renewable energy, but also help an impressive new technology generate local jobs by taking advantage of Cleveland's great manufacturing workforce and factories," said Brad Mohr, assistant director of ballpark operations. "Working together with Cleveland State, we can take advantage of this great opportunity to continue to teach our fans about clean energy technologies."
The turbine is being mounted on the ballpark's southeast corner. It will be illuminated with colored LED lights and can be seen by anyone traveling into downtown on roadways from the south.

(Updates with closing share prices in last paragraph.)

Dec. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Warren Buffett’s MidAmerican Energy Holdings agreed to buy a 49 percent stake in NRG Energy Inc.’s $1.8 billion Agua Caliente solar project, the billionaire’s second investment in solar this month.

The 290-megawatt power plant is being built in Arizona by First Solar Inc., which expects to complete the installation of its panels by 2014, Princeton, New Jersey-based NRG said today in a statement. Terms of MidAmerican’s purchase weren’t disclosed.

Buffett’s foray into solar shows that utility-scale power plants offer good returns with little downside risk, said Paul Clegg, an analyst at Mizuho Securities USA in New York. Power from the plant, which won a $967 million loan guarantee from the U.S. Energy Department this year, will be sold to a PG&E Corp. utility under a 25-year contract at undisclosed prices.

“The utility contracts are favorable and solid,” Clegg said today in an interview. “Plus, they offer tax credits that may be useful to large, profitable companies.”

Increasing competition from China’s solar industry has cut panel prices by as much as 50 percent this year, leading First Solar to shift its focus to building larger scale power plants from selling panels to rooftop developers.

MidAmerican on Dec. 7 agreed to buy the entire $2 billion Topaz power plant in California from Tempe, Arizona-based First Solar. MidAmerican is a subsidiary of Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

NRG rose 0.6 percent to $18.31 and First Solar rose 1.5 percent to $31.91 at the close of trading in New York. Berkshire fell $75 to $112,325.

How to Build an Energy Independent House

Types of Green Power!!

Green power" received its name because it harnesses the natural, renewable power of the Earth. This type of power puts emphasis on sustainability and efficiency. More efficient ways of harnessing and capturing energy are desirable because they reduce the toll on the environment. Sustainable energy sources are also desirable because dependence on non-renewable energy sources cannot meet the needs of the entire human race indefinitely. Renewable or persistent sources can.

Hydroelectric

  • Hydroelectric dams harness the power of gravity and potential energy to power gigantic turbines that divert energy to generators. This method is the most widespread of all renewable energy sources; it also produces no direct waste, relatively little carbon dioxide and does not use non-renewable fuel. Hydroelectric dams do lead ecosystem damage, however, because huge areas of land are flooded or filled to create dam reservoirs to generate this power.

Geothermal

  • Geothermal energy is extraordinarily efficient, highly renewable and very environmentally friendly. It's usually generated by capturing the steam and the pressure created in fissures or boreholes. For this reason, geothermal energy is incredibly costly to harness and geographically limited to areas with volcanic activity or proximity to tectonic activity.

Wind Power

  • Wind power uses turbines, just like hydroelectric power. This type of power is among the oldest, used to power mills and other early forms of human industry. This energy is costly in terms of space needed to set up gigantic wind-farms in prime locations. One increasingly popular location for wind-farms is in offshore areas, sometimes co-existing with tidal energy turbines.

Solar Power

  • Solar Power is the least efficient of these types, mostly because of the newness of the technology. Photovoltaic panels are expensive to build, deploy and maintain, and the real estate they require to be efficient is huge. Innovations such as concentrated solar towers that focus sunlight narrowly onto panels, point to a promising future for solar energy, however
